Introduction to Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

This talk will discuss the basics of Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM). Exploiting the quantum mechanical effect of tunneling of electrons from a tip, with known properties, and the system under study, STM has played an instrumental role in the study of several quantum systems including superconductors, topological insulators, heavy-fermion systems, etc.
